Website Design Checklist for a Clear, Mobile-Friendly Business Website

Plan a business website redesign with this practical checklist for navigation, mobile layouts, accessible content, forms and clear calls to action.

Start with one business goal

A website design brief should begin with the action you want a visitor to take. A local service business might prioritize an inquiry, while a retailer needs product discovery and checkout. Write down the main action and the questions people need answered before they can take it. This keeps visual decisions connected to a useful purpose.

Make navigation match customer questions

Use labels that describe the destination: services, projects, about, and contact. Avoid hiding essential information inside unfamiliar names. Give each important service a dedicated page with a clear scope and an appropriate next step. A visitor arriving from search should understand that page without having to start again at the homepage.

Design for small screens first

Review the page at a narrow width before adding decorative detail. Keep paragraphs readable, make controls comfortable to tap, and leave room around buttons. Test the real navigation and forms on a phone, including opening dropdowns and correcting a validation error. A layout that merely fits the screen can still be difficult to use.

Give visitors evidence they can inspect

A portfolio is more useful when each project has a descriptive title and a working live link. Reviews should preserve the reviewer’s words and explain their source. Do not invent project results or imply that an attractive design automatically produced more sales. Clear evidence builds confidence without exaggeration.

Keep visual polish lightweight

Use compressed images with dimensions so space is reserved before they load. Important headings should appear immediately rather than wait behind a long reveal animation. Make motion optional for people who prefer reduced movement. A fast, readable page creates a better first impression than an effect that delays the main message.

A practical review before launch

Ask someone unfamiliar with the business to find a service, inspect a project, and send a test inquiry. Note where they hesitate. Correct the unclear labels and missing information before adding more decoration. Then verify the experience on desktop and mobile and confirm the inquiry actually reaches your mailbox.
